Makoto, après 10 ans dans une entreprise de design, enseigne aujourd'hui l'art du manga et de l’illustration à Okayama. Il illustre aussi pour des publicités et des jeux de société. C'est lors d'une course en montagne, en observant la ville comme miniature une fois arrivé au sommet, qu'il a été inspiré pour les illustrations d'Happy City.
